Beloved Parthenope
Paolo Sorrentino is an expert when it comes to beautifully composed images of an Italy straight out of a travel brochure. And is specialised too in the underlying big questions, sometimes more and sometimes less hidden within them. Following on from such successes as the Oscar-winning »La Grande Bellezza«, he returns to his native Naples for»Parthenope«. The film’s title and eponymous main character reference the ancient legend of the siren Parthenope, who was once washed up on Naples’ beachfront and remains the city’s patron saint to this day.
Parthenope is a young woman, as beautiful as she is intelligent. She captivates everyone around her and especially the men. The film charts her life in episodes ranging from the 1950s to the present day. Part individual and part allegorical figure, Parthenope’s life resembles a voyage of impossible love and fleeting opportunities, perfect in its imperfection. More than anything, the film is an unequivocal declaration of love for Naples.
This makes the film screening the perfect complement to the »Viva Napoli« festival, which is taking place from 21-24 November at the Elbphilharmonie and explores the musical landscape and history of the southern Italian city.
Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie+ programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.
