The Soul of the Balkans

Sadness and an exuberant joy for life are not mutually exclusive here. Indeed, when singer Antonija Batinić lifts her powerful voice, both extremes can be felt at the same time – as the emotions transcend any need to understand the language. The band Mostar Sevdah Reunion has long championed »Sevdah«, also known as »Bosnian blues«. Blending violin, rhythmic guitars and vocal melodies, this is music that goes straight to the heart. Thanks to their efforts, this traditional folk music originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina is now known in many countries around the world.

Formed in Mostar, a picturesque town south of Sarajevo, in 1999, the group Mostar Sevdah emerged after years of war, uniting musicians from diverse ethnic backgrounds – Croats, Serbs, and Bosnians – on a mission to bring Sevdah to global audiences and mix it up with other genres. Their sound fuses old and new, combining fast-paced dance songs with heartfelt ballads and influences of jazz. Antonija Batinić’s vocals combine intricate oriental influences with a rock-like, groovy energy.

Celebrating 25 years together as a band, the latest album released by Mostar Sevdah Reunion, »Bosa Mara«, once again showcases Balkan music’s rich diversity, far beyond the typical brass bands. The album features Bosnian love songs, a Croatian ballad and traditional Roma melodies, even offering a Bosnian take on the jazz classic »Bésame Mucho« with the track »Ljubi me Dugo«.
