At the pinnacle of success

In her homeland of Brazil, Marisa Monte is a superstar: sometimes, she performs there in front of hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic fans, who can sing along with each line of her self-penned songs. But there are fans of good Brazilian music worldwide, which is why Marisa Monte is also highly acclaimed in many different countries. Six years after her Elbphilharmonie debut with the all-star trio Tribalistas, the diva now finally returns to Hamburg. Whether she will also top off her stage garb with a sparkling tiara on her head here as she lately likes to do at home? The royal look and feel would be entirely justified because it seems as if Marisa Monte is right at the pinnacle of her success.

One song title by the singer who was born and grew up in Rio, and as a child already emulated idols such as Maria Callas and Billie Holiday, sounds like a self-portrait in five words: »Sou feliz, alegre e forte«. Be lucky, happy and strong – Marisa Monte defined her career in such a positive and self-determined way from the beginning. At aged 14, she wanted to be an opera singer. She then studied this art form for five years, the last of which in the promised land of opera, in Italy. But no later than then, she realised that it was her own music which makes her happy. And sensed that her wonderful voice would only fully display its magic in the right handling with a microphone.

When, at 19, Marisa Monte returned to Rio, she discovered a scene where still almost exclusively men wrote the songs for the great female singers. But Monte wanted to do everything herself – lyrics, music, production, publishing. And this is how she has kept it to this day. She has long been the model for subsequent generations herself.

The Música Popular Brasileira is closely linked to names such as Antônio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Beth Carvalho and Gilberto Gil. Marisa Monte has enhanced this impressive list with her own name with her tender and, thereby, highly accentuated, smooth voice and great songs.
