The one and only Mahler

»I have generally found that humour of this kind [...] is not often recognised even by the best.« This was Gustav Mahler’s bitter realisation after the premiere of his Symphony No. 4, which he himself originally described as a »humoresque«. Obviously, the contemporary audience had expected more serious things from the more venerable court opera director. From today’s perspective, the symphony has all the characteristics that make Mahler’s music so unique: profundity and humour, melancholy and the grotesque, the folkloristic and the touching. The path to paradise leads through darkness, but in the end the »sky is full of violins«. Or is it? Andris Nelsons and the Gewandhaus Orchestra will masterfully fill this question, which Mahler has cast in music, with life. An overwhelming opportunity to immerse yourself in Mahler’s opulent world of sound.
