English songbirds

In the UK, they are a musical highlight in the run-up to Christmas: the Advent services and concerts of the choir at St John’s College in Cambridge, broadcast every year on BBC radio. Now the choir, whose roots go back to the 17th century, comes to the Elbphilharmonie with a programme of beautiful English Christmas music. The concert will be conducted by Christopher Gray, who has also been Director of Music at St John’s College since 2023.

Over 100 recordings and concert tours worldwide confirm the reputation of the St John’s singers. And in 2022, the ensemble added to a new feather to its cap, becoming the first of the traditional Oxford and Cambridge choirs to admit girls and women to its ranks and thus enriching the full and expressive sound for which the choir has always been praised.

The St John’s College Choir is made up of 13 children and young people and a further 18 adult voices, and offers its members – similar to its famous counterparts in Germany, the Thomanerchor and Kreuzchor – comprehensive vocal training. Their repertoire ranges from very old to contemporary music and the young voices particularly enjoy singing an atmospheric Christmas programme like this one.
