Xavier de Maistre / Les Arts Florissants / William Christie
Mozart / Krumpholz / Haydn
»Great sensitivity coupled with power, full of deep tenderness – Xavier de Maistre is the star of the harp and with good reason« - thus the NDR Kultur Journal, putting into words playing that leaves the listener speechless. It’s a long time since harp music sounded like this!
Tainted with prejudice and banished to the left-hand corner of the orchestral pit, the versatile instrument led a solitary existence for many years. Until French harpist Xavier de Maistre came along and gave the instrument a completely new image – partly by rediscovering forgotten works written for the harp, and partly by arranging well-known harp pieces, thus vastly expanding the instrument’s repertoire.
In his latest concert programme de Maistre looks back to the days when the elegant instrument was in vogue, to the days at the court of Marie Antoinette when not only the queen plucked the harp strings, but also virtuosi such as Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz and Johann David Hermann.
