The Orchestra of the Americas / Gabriela Montero
Elbphilharmonie Summer
Gabriela Montero is one of the few classical pianists who also improvise in their concerts, even taking requests from the audience. She hails from Venezuela, and received intensive support from famous master pianist Martha Argerich. Ms Montero was only eight when she made her debut with Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra; she later went on to study in the USA. Tonight in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall she plays the solo part in her own piano concerto.
Her musical partner is the Orchestra of the Americas, a top-class youth orchestra made up of outstanding musicians from North and South America. Montero recorded her first composition, »Ex Patria«, with the YOA in 2015 and promptly won a Latin Grammy for it.
Tonight’s concert programme is exclusively American: in addition to Montero’s »Latin Concerto«, we hear symphonies by US composer Aaron Copland and the Mexican Carlos Chávez.
