Taksim Trio
Elbphilharmonie Summer
The cultural melting pot of Istanbul is the home of the Taksim Trio, which was founded in 2007. The three musicians are eager commuters between different musical worlds. Hüsnü Şenlendirici plays the clarinet and the Armenian duduk; İsmail Tunçbilek plays the long-necked Turkish lute bağlama, while Aytaç Doğan’s instrument is the kanun, a type of zither.
Deeply rooted in traditional and classical Turkish music, the trio is nonetheless open to the improvisational freedom of jazz. Bandleader Şenlendirici, who already figured in the Turkish charts with the German jazz and Krautrock band Embryo, is always looking for new musical challenges. Thus the Taksim Trio’s music also shows the influence of gypsy music and Spanish flamenco.
