Shanghai Symphony Orchestra
Elbphilharmonie Summer / Please note the change of programme!
Ambassadors from the Far East: the symphony orchestra from Shanghai presents Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work by the Russian composer Aaron Avshalomov and a violin concerto from their native China.
The narrow alleys, known as hutongs, that once constituted the centre of life in Peking are recalled by Russian composer Aaron Avshalomov in his piece »Hutongs of Peking« – not without adding all kinds of Chinese percussion instruments to the orchestra.
And in the violin concerto »Butterfly Lovers«, too, we hear Chinese melodies and harmonies. Written for a Western orchestra, the concerto has become one of the best-known pieces of Chinese music in the meantime.
The concert is brought to an impressive close by Dimitri Shostakovich’s profound and ambiguous Fifth Symphony, which the composer wrote during the years of Stalin’s rule of terror.
