Schostakowitsch: Cello Concerto & Symphony No. 10
Cellist Sol Gabetta has a special connection with the music of Dmitri Shostakovich: it was with his Second Cello Concerto that she made her international breakthrough in 2004, accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic. Since then, this is not the only Shostakovich work she loves: she throws herself with equal unbounded brilliance and infectious vivacity into the composer’s First Cello Concerto, with its mix of lyrical pensiveness and breathtaking virtuosity.
The second work by the great Russian composer on tonight’s programme is his rousing Tenth Symphony, which he wrote in 1953, a year that was crucial for his future. This was the year when Stalin died, and if we believe Shostakovich’s son, his father portrayed »the terrible face« of the dictator in the second movement. Music that gives the listener goose bumps – played by the Oslo Philharmonic, which has been regarded as one of the top orchestras for Shostakovich since the time when Mariss Jansons was its principal conductor.
