Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg / Yuja Wang
Tchaikovsky / Ravel / Shostakovich / Stravinsky
Concert appearances often call for a good dose of sportsmanship. This much is shown not only by conductors who have perspired so much that they have to change shirts in the interval, but also by soloists like the Chinese-American pianist Yuja Wang who are constantly looking for new challenges. Normally, a classical music concert features one solo concerto, but for her concert in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, she has chosen to play two – both extremely tricky works, of course. In Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand, written for the war-disabled pianist Paul Wittgenstein, a single hand has to move across the entire breadth of the keyboard.
