Musical quarry
»These are rocks from which everyone may sculpt what they will«, said Gustav Mahler about the folk song collection »Des Knaben Wunderhorn«, which he took as the model for his own collection of songs of the same name. The stories encompass all aspects of life, from young love and descriptions of nature to scenes of war and musings about this mortal world and what awaits beyond death – tragic, humorous and often full of biting satire. From the source material, Gustav Mahler created vivid theatrical scenes in which the soloist portrays both sides of the dialogue between a couple.
The lieder call for a performer who loves to play – so baritone Matthias Goerne perfectly fits the bill. After all, Der Tagesspiegel called the singer’s expressive power »an elemental force that glides, within the same breath, into lightness, brightness and almost untouched heights.« At his side, the highly sought-after Columbian conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada leads the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
