He is known for his ingeniously-designed concert programmes – Sir Simon Rattle, star of the rostrum, a popular public figure and also chief conductor of what is probably Britain’s top orchestra. The London dream team has scheduled several appearances in Hamburg this season, among them two evenings during the Elbphilharmonie anniversary week, where Rattle has placed a few repertoire gems on the programme alongside big names like Mahler and Dvořák.
Thus on the first of the two evenings we hear a movement from the main work of Austrian composer Hans Rott, his Symphony in E major, which triggered a dispute between Brahms and Bruckner in its day. One of Rott’s fellow students at the Vienna Conservatoire was Gustav Mahler, whose »Blumine« opens the concert. We then move on to modern music with Anton Webern’s »Six Pieces for Orchestra«, before the concert is brought to a close by Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony.
