Handel’s Orpheus

As an Englishman born and bred, it goes without saying that Ian Bostridge has been familiar with Handel’s music since childhood: in his schooldays he sang Handel’s »Messiah« all over the country in a boys’ choir. This forged a lifelong musical friendship, as Bostridge has demonstrated on numerous complete recordings of the composer’s operas and oratorios. His programme »Handel: Around the World in Song« presents highlights from Handel’s huge vocal oeuvre.

Together with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, known for excellent sound produced on original instruments, Bostridge reminds his audience of the great British tradition of Handel tenors. »Women’s voices and countertenors enthusiastically embraced this music,« Bostridge says. »But we shouldn’t ignore the remarkable tenor repertoire that Handel gave us.« The voice of Ian Bostridge and the genius of Handel: a promising combination indeed!
