Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester / Gautier Capuçon / Lorenzo Viotti
Elbphilharmonie Summer
The French cellist Gautier Capuçon possesses a full tone and a sumptuous vibrato, but he can also be more restrained when the music demands – then his instrument sighs gently or sings quietly. The dramatic virtuoso passages and lush melodies of Dvořák’s popular Concerto for Cello and Orchestra seem tailor-made for him.
Other works on tonight’s programme are the turbulent overture to Verdi’s crime opera »La forza del destino« and the impressionist dream worlds of Debussy’s »Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune«. Then last but definitely not least, the orchestra makes the concert hall quake with the archaic force of Stravinsky’s »The Rite of Spring«.
