Mugham from Azerbaijan grew up on the borders between Persia, the Caucasus, Iraq and the Turkic states; it is a modal, improvised art whose roots lie in secular bardic and spiritual sufi music. Mugham has been on the UNESCO list of immaterial cultural heritage since 2003. Sahib Pashazade, a member of the Azerbaijani State Philharmonic Orchestra , and Kamran Kerimov, a key figure in the country’s percussion scene, are among today’s outstanding Mugham masters.
The long-necked lute tar with its two heart-shaped soundboxes made of mulberry wood and its voluminous sound is the leading lute instrument of the Persian cultural area. Pashazade plays it with a technique of great virtuosity, holding the instrument at an unusually high angle in front of his chest. He enters into a congenial dialogue with percussionist Kamran Kerimov, who not only fills the role of a sensitive accompanist with the kettle drum nagara, but also contributes energetic solos.
