Not only is Europe rich in musical traditions – in other parts of the world you can also find centuries-old, highly developed forms of music. The Elbphilharmonie »World Classical Music« series presents this valuable music. The journey begins at the Bosporus, the junction between Europe and Asia, with Kudsi Erguner.

The renowned virtuoso of the oriental ney flute learned to play from his father and grandfather, both important masters of the instrument. Erguner presents classical Turkish music and Sufi singing.

The fine art of jugalbandi, duets in Indian classical music, is perfectly mastered by the two newcomers Debapriya and Samanwaya from Kolkata. In their performance, vocals and sitar playing blend together with the accompanying tabla drumming.

Vietnamese artist Huong Thanh (English: lotus fragrance) sings delicate, ornamental songs from her homeland; alongside her enchanting voice are sounds of the dan dranh zither and the dan bau monochord.

Finally, in the highlands of West Sumatra with the Minangkabau people, you can find, for our ears, an unfamiliar feature of the Sufi ritual. Talago Buni performs this spiritual music with gongs, zithers, flutes, harmonium and drums made from coconut timber.
