»I had the great pleasure of hearing your quartets during a good performance. Never has instrumental music given me such joy.« With these words, English music historian Charles Burney bowed to the brilliant string quartet composer Joseph Haydn. Now you can join in with Burney’s enthusiasm. In the series, top international formations perform four concerts, each featuring a great quartet classic by Haydn.

Two of the ensembles hail from England, a country in which Haydn was once celebrated as the »Shakespeare of music«. The world-famous Belcea Quartet, which has its own Hamburg fan club, creates a fascinating musical dialogue between Haydn and the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. The other ensemble visiting from England is the highly acclaimed Doric String Quartet.

The Dover Quartet from the US honours the works of Jewish composer Szymon Laks. And the Finnish musicians from Meta4 and the Gringolts Quartett from Switzerland demonstrate exactly how two top quartets can together become a world-class double quartet.
