As a child, Matthias Pintscher always wanted to be a conductor and a composer, so that he could »give new life to the orchestra«. His wish came true: today, he conducts leading international orchestras such as the Berlin and New York Philharmonics. He teaches at Juilliard in New York, where he also lives, and composes works that are complex and sensual at the same time. The many facets of his personality – and his charisma – make him the perfect choice to be resident composer for the first Elbphilharmonie season.

The series’ title »Multiverse« deliberately has a double meaning. Not only does it symbolise the multi-dimensional work of Pintscher, but also hints at something larger. Over the course of three seasons, the Elbphilharmonie presents three of today's most important composers: Matthias Pintscher, Peter Eötvös, and George Benjamin. Chronologically at the mid point is a spectacular work by Peter Eötvös, commissioned by the Elbphilharmonie and entitled »Multiversum« - the name of which was the inspiration for the title of the whole three-year series.

Matthias Pintscher, the first season’s protagonist, takes up the baton three times in the course of his »multiverse« residency: he conducts the virtuoso Lucerne Festival Academy; the Parisian ensemble intercontemporain for the opening of the festival »Greatest Hits«; and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, well-known by concertgoers in Hamburg.

In addition, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra presents a world premiere composed by Pintscher that has been commissioned for the opening of the Elbphilharmonie. All the aspects of Matthias Pintscher’s work will be combined on »Multiverse Day« on March 4, 2017.
