It has been impossible to imagine jazz without the piano ever since the heyday of ragtime around 1900 – and the jazz piano has, over the last few years, also become an integral part of the programme in Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle. »Jazz Piano« is the name of the series that is luring the most creative masters of 88 keys to the Recital Hall, where the optimal acoustics make it possible to experience soaring flights of virtuosity.

Has jazz not long since become a classical form of music in its own right? With highly revered idols and a history full of stylistic developments which contemporary improv geniuses casually slip into their music? Exactly.

As always, this series focuses on two different formats. On piano in the standard trio set-up with bass and drums are the classically influenced old master Uri Caine, the intellectual shooting star Pablo Held and the profound Anke Helfrich. Two very different characters give solo performances: Jason Moran from the Afro-American scene in Harlem, who injects a shot of rock music into his songs, and the Armenian Tigran Hamasyan, whose music is influenced by the folk music of his homeland.
