Das Alte Werk

Great, Pre-1800 Masterpieces in the Laeizshalle Grand Hall

Concerto de Cavalieri
Concerto de Cavalieri

Resurrecting the sound of past centuries on historic instruments: that is the mission of the ensembles that perform in the »Das Alte Werk« series. Now organised for the first time as a collaboration between the Elbphilharmonie and NDR, the current programme promises a number of rarities such as the earliest known opera by a female composer: Francesca Caccini’s »La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina« from 1625.

»Marc’ Antonio e Cleopatra« by the Bergedorf composer Johann Adolf Hasse is a thrilling rediscovery. It was composed for the legendary castrato Farinelli; countertenor Valer Sabadus now scintillates in the title role.

The Al Ayre Español ensemble performs Christmas Baroque works from Spain, while the brilliant Concerto de’ Cavalieri takes the audience to Venice, the city of Vivaldi and Albinoni.

Klaas Stok, the NDR Chor’s new chief conductor, celebrates his debut in the venerable concert series with J. S. Bach’s »Magnificat«.

The series is brought to a close by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, which performs Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Passion cantata »Die letzten Leiden des Erlösers«, which was premiered in 1774 in Hamburg, where the composer worked as music director.
