The gamelan – a collection of instruments consisting of gongs, drums and metallophones that produces delightful sounds – was invented at royal courts on the islands of Bali and Java many centuries ago. The Elbphilharmonie owns a particularly beautiful Javanese gamelan that is played by two ensembles – under the guidance of the experienced leader Steven Tanoto.
