Elbphilharmonie Summer

Two weeks of concerts in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with major symphony orchestras and a unique summer mix of jazz, pop and world music

Summer in Hamburg! That means strolling through Planten un Blomen during the day, enjoying the view of the water on the Alster and Elbe – and experiencing top international acts from the worlds of classical music, jazz, world music and pop at the Elbphilharmonie in the evening.

The »Elbphilharmonie Sommer« opens with young piano high-flyer Bruce Liu playing Maurice Ravel’s jazz-infused piano concerto. Two of the world’s best young orchestras indulge in romantic sounds with star support from Renaud Capuçon and Manfred Honeck on the one hand and high-flyers Julia Hagen and Elim Chan on the other. The Arctic Philharmonic brings Scandinavian music from the far north of Norway and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra surprises with a didgeridoo concert from the deepest south of Australia. French film legend Isabelle Huppert takes on the speaking role in the epic »Dream Requiem« by the multi-talented Rufus Wainwright. Mozart’s »Magic Flute«, one of the opera favourites of all time, will also be performed by The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in a high-calibre and effective performance.

The non-classical concerts also provide international flair. Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, carries on his father’s sound, while US rapper Noname tells of her life in Chicago in poetry slam-style lyrics. The »Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy« presents highly talented young musicians who have spent a week learning from renowned jazz greats. Finally, Mostar Sevdah Reunion perform Bosnian blues and pianist Tigran Hamasyan brings Armenian-coloured jazz rock to the stage.
