From the wonderland of sound
Pianist Hiromi must love variety. For her debut at the Elbphilharmonie in 2019, she came solo, four years later with a string quartet, and now she brings very different tonal colours to Hamburg again with her new, dynamically playing fusion jazz band Sonicwonder. Fans of Hiromi should this time look forward to a party of clever, lively and electrified virtuoso music, brimming over and drenched in grooves, ideas, complexity, playfulness – and individuality.
On hearing Hiromi’s latest caper »Sonicwonderland« (2023), the three greatest keyboard giants of this genre automatically come to mind – Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul, who wrote music history with their bands The Headhunters, Return To Forever and Weather Report in the 1970s. Hiromi switches the instruments in the pieces and, consequently, the sounds – effortlessly and with each still at such a breakneck speed. Triumphant melodies on a small keyboard sounding like a modular synthesiser, added to that effective playing on a Nord synthesiser – and occasionally repeatedly flashes her impeccable technique on the piano.
The rhythm combination of Hadrien Feraud (electric bass) and Gene Coye (drums) supplies mellow grooves to the master craftswoman and with the trumpeter Adam O’Farrill a worthy melody maker assists her, also giving free rein to his imagination with the help of some electronic colouration. The equally history-conscious and carefree distinctive music of this quartet is a unique delight.
