»We‘re not the K-pop band your daughter listens to!« ADG7 make clear. Yet the stage show of the nine-piece South Korean band, who introduce themselves as the »best band in the world« at the beginning of their concerts, is at least as captivating as the country‘s biggest musical pop exports. With their jolly mix of Korean tradition and modern influences, ADG7 enchant audiences both in their home country and far beyond, on international stages including the festivals in Glastonbury and Roskilde.
Shamanistic ritual music and folk song traditions originating from the north of Korea before the division, with elements of folk and pop that make it all danceable and easily accessible: three female singers deliver powerful vocal sound typically associated with Korea, accompanied by six musicians playing traditional Korean instruments. The performers also bring the history and culture of their homeland right into the present day with their colourful stage outfits.
The music of ADG7 gives voice to the hope for reunification with North Korea, setting to music the wish for lasting peace in their country and worldwide. The group was founded to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea‘s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. This anniversary is so important to them that even the band‘s name »Ak Dan Gwang Chil« alludes to it. »Ak Dan« translates as »music band«. »Gwang Chil« or »G7« is an abbreviation of the 70th »Gwangbokjeol«, the National Liberation Day of Korea.
